Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the name of a transparent plastic dental tray system that corrects the same problems that metal braces do. Invisalign:

  • Straightens your teeth
  • Eliminates gaps between your teeth
  • Corrects crowded teeth
  • Fixes alignment problems

Invisalign can repair an overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. You have an overbite when your upper front teeth overlap the lower teeth, while an underbite is the opposite problem.

If you have a crossbite, when you close your mouth, some of your upper teeth are in front of your lower teeth, and some are behind. An open bite means that your upper and lower teeth don’t meet when you close your mouth, often because the teeth slant outward.

How does Invisalign work?

At Willow Glen Dental Center, your dentist makes a model of your mouth and creates a plan showing how every tooth must move to straighten your teeth and correct their alignment. Technicians at Invisalign use this information to make a series of customized plastic aligners designed to achieve your goals.

Your aligners consist of two clear plastic trays, one for your upper teeth and the other for your lower teeth. You’ll wear the first pair of trays for 1-2 weeks, then replace them with the second pair in the series. This process continues until you finish wearing all the aligners in the series.

Each new set of aligners is slightly different from the previous set. Each seceding set places further pressure on your teeth, gradually moving them into their correct position. By the time you get through with the last aligners, your teeth are straightened — if you’ve diligently wore them every day.

How long do I wear Invisalign aligners?

You can remove your aligners to eat, drink, and brush your teeth. Otherwise, you need to wear them for 20-22 hours every day to achieve successful results.

Invisalign treatment takes 12-18 months. Metal braces, on the other hand, generally take 18-30 months.

What is ClearCorrect®?

ClearCorrect is another brand of clear aligners that work the same way as Invisalign. Your Willow Glen Dental Center dentist will explain the differences between the two systems and talk with you about which one is the ideal treatment for you.
