New Year, New Smile: 3 Resolutions for Better Oral Health

New Year, New Smile: 3 Resolutions for Better Oral Health

Every January, millions of people across the United States set New Year’s resolutions. Some people want to eat healthier or exercise more, while others hope to quit bad habits such as smoking. Another resolution that receives less coverage is improved oral health. But if you ask us, it’s one of the best decisions you can make.

At Willow Glen Dental Center in San Jose, California, our experienced team loves helping patients keep their teeth and gums healthy. Here, we highlight three simple resolutions you can make to protect your smile throughout 2026.

Resolution #1: Commit to consistent oral healthcare at home

Practicing good oral hygiene might seem obvious, but a recent survey found that American adults forget to brush their teeth an average of five times per week. The same study found similar results for flossing and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash.

Establishing a consistent schedule can make all the difference. To reduce your risk of cavities, periodontal disease, and bad breath, brush twice daily, floss once daily, and rinse with mouthwash after each brushing.

Similarly, replace your toothbrush or toothbrush heads (if you use an electric toothbrush) regularly. A good rule of thumb is to switch your brush out as soon as you notice the bristles starting to fray.

Resolution #2: Prioritize preventive dental care

About 73% of Americans experience some type of dental anxiety, which can make it easy to put regular check-ups off. However, many dental issues, such as gum disease and tooth decay, don’t show obvious signs. The only way to know if you’re at risk is with routine dental exams

We encourage all of our patients to schedule a dental checkup every six months. This presents an opportunity to get oral X-rays, talk with your dentist, and learn about any potential issues that might become problems in the future. Early detection can prevent side effects such as tooth loss and reduce the need for costly treatments later on.

Resolution #3: Make mouth-healthy food and drink choices

The foods and drinks that you consume directly impact your oral health. Carbonated beverages, such as sparkling water and soda, can erode tooth enamel, while snacks such as chips and candy can increase plaque buildup and the risk of cavities.

You don’t have to avoid your favorite treats altogether, but it’s essential to find balance. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to rinse away food particles and bacteria. Incorporate fruits and veggies into your snack rotation to prevent plaque buildup and provide your body with nutrients that support tooth and gum health.
