What Are Implant-Supported Teeth?

An implant-supported denture is a prosthetic device that clicks snugly into place over implants that are placed directly into the bone of the jaw.

They offer a semi-permanent solution for missing teeth, providing a stable dental prosthetic that allows the patient to eat and enjoy a full smile while still allowing the ability to easily remove and place back in the mouth whenever necessary.

Why Are Implant-Supported Teeth Better?

While traditional complete dentures are able to successfully replace missing teeth in the mouth and provide a perfectly acceptable result, some patients may find that they have trouble adjusting to them.

Complete dentures rest upon the patient’s gums. While some patients may be able to simply pop their dentures in and head out for the day, most people need to apply denture adhesive in order to keep the dentures in place. However, for many people, the adhesive doesn’t always have a tight seal  and move causing them to develop sore spots on the the gums  For some people, using denture adhesive can be messy or troublesome, and for those with low bone levels, even large amounts of adhesive can’t keep the dentures completely in place for long. 

Adhesive also typically needs to be re-applied throughout the day or after eating, which can be troublesome or embarrassing for some people.  These dentures that don’t have a tight fit can make it difficult to chew hard, crunchy and chewy foods. 

Implant dentures snap in place on top of implants, eliminating the need for adhesive and ensuring that the dentures stay firmly in place throughout the day. The patient can wear their implant dentures all day without trouble and easily remove them at the end of the day before they go to sleep; no hassle, no mess, and no embarrassment. This tight fit also allow patients to eat a larger variety of foods.

Things to Keep in Mind

While implant dentures are typically better than complete dentures, there are some things that are important to keep in mind while considering the two different treatment methods:

• In order to qualify as a candidate for implants, you must have adequate bone structure.

Your dentist will take x-rays and possible CT scan to determine the level of bone present in the mouth. If you do not have the amount of bone necessary for successful implant placement, you may need a bone graft.  In some cases, you may not have the option of pursuing implant dentures.

• Implant placements help discourage bone recession and can help promote a healthier mouth long-term.
• Implant dentures are typically more expensive, as they require more preparation  and time to be completed. 
• Implants are not covered under most insurance plans, but many insurance plans do cover at least portions of the cost of dentures.
