Flossing Basics

Plaque is essentially a sticky film of bacteria that rests on the teeth. If plaque is allowed to remain on the surface or between the teeth, it poses a risk for causing the development of decay in the protective layer of enamel. Caring for your oral health has a direct impact on the health of the rest of your body; it’s important to ensure that you are taking all necessary precautions.

Proper Floss Techniques

Practicing proper flossing habits is important for ensuring that you are properly removing all signs of harmful plaque from between the teeth.

In order to properly floss your teeth:

The type of floss you use is completely up to your discretion. Waxed floss is usually the floss of choice, as it is much less likely to fray or tear.

Flossing should be done in the evening prior to bed.  Floss before brushing your teeth. Flossing will “loosen” the plaque and brushing will help remove it.  If possible, floss after you eat to prevent the food from sitting between your teeth.
